Our Examination Process

Our ASIM examination is dedicated to assessing a students musical technique and competence from grades one to eight. It provides a structured pathway which focuses on nurturing skill and aptitude through a series of Practical and Theory examinations. Here is a breakdown of what to expect from each grade:

Grade One & Grade Two
(Practical Only Exam)

-
Grades One and Two assess a students fundamental technique and ability, often marking their introduction to memorising compositions. Additionally, an insight into music theory is introduced in the form of oral questions. It is important to note that a theory examination is not required for these two grades.

Grade Three - Grade Seven
(Practical & Theory Examinations)

-
Improvisation is important in Indian Music and through these practical examinations, the student will be introduced and encouraged to develop their improvisational skills through raga alapana, niraval and kalpana swaram. The theory examinations will further expand on these concepts through the learning and understanding of raga scales, notation writing and instrument labelling.

Grade Eight (Diploma)
(Listening Theory Exam, Teaching Assessment, and a Live Performance)

Music performance is a pivotal part of a musician's journey and our diploma exam is designed to motivate students to showcase their musical learning with confidence before an audience. Here is a breakdown of the exam:

-
Listening Theory Exam: The theory examination is structured to encourage students to develop their listening skills, through ragam, thalam and instrument identification.

-
Teaching Assessment: Our teaching test goes beyond evaluating musical proficiency; through examining how the student teaches and communicates with a young music student, we are able to assess their ability to convey their musical knowledge in an engaging manner.

-
Live Performance: To contribute towards their musical performance experience, students will present a 45-minute performance in front of a live audience. This aims to boost a students confidence, enhance their stage presence, and develop their ability to perform alongside other accompanying artists.
